The most qualified team requires coordination. A major role of the architect is to provide coordination between the various consultants work.  This coordination is done by a series of check sets exchanged between all consultants at various stages in the projects development, and a contract obligation for each consultant to review the check sets and return coordination comments to the other team members. The architect must take the lead on complex projects to assure the contract documents are well coordinated prior to the start of construction.  This is a crucial step in a document development process that has a proven track record of minimizing construction phase change orders.
